Gold Star Legacy: 2014 Lance Corporal Leon Deraps Memorial Scholarship Walk/Run
2014 Lance Corporal Leon Deraps Memorial Scholarship Walk/Run
On May 6, 2006, Lance Corporal Leon B. Deraps of Jamestown, Missouri made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.
To honor Leon, his family, along with the Moniteau County C-1, Jamestown-area high school FFA, set up a scholarship fund in his name in late 2006. Since its foundation, the fund has awarded $1,000 scholarships to approximately 25 Jamestown high school graduates, with a further 6 being handed out this year.
Money for the scholarship is raised through an annual 5 mile walk/run/ride held in early May. First held in 2009, 2014 marks the event's sixth anniversary. This year, the walk/run/ride was held Saturday, May 10, at 9:00 am in Jamestown, Missouri, and Marine Parents donated $676 to the scholarship fund. The money was raised in a raffle at our last Care Package Project pack day, Saturday, April 26, 2014.
The morning began with Leon's father, Dale, and retired Army Reservist David Schaull speaking to the crowd before the participants set off into the Mid-Missouri countryside. The ever-growing event saw more than 300 people attend this year's walk, including Marine Parents employee Duncan.
In addition to helping raise money for the scholarship fund, Marine Parents also donated keychains and magnets to event participants. We were truly honored to be able to provide support to this Gold Star family (as well as other Gold Star families and their legacy events and organizations across the country).
When asked about this year's event, Leon's mother (and longtime Marine Parents volunteer) Sandy had this to say: "It was a beautiful morning...a wonderful family outing and event. [It was] so awesome."
